Kay is a native of Monroeville, Alabama and an honors graduate of Monroe County High School. After graduating from high school, she attended Auburn University where she received her B.S. degree with honors. She continued her education by attending Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her Juris Doctorate from Tulane in 1992 and is currently a member of the Alabama State Bar and the Georgia State Bar. She is presently employed at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville where she serves as the director of Adult Education and Family Literacy and as an adjunct instructor. Kay was a member of the Class of 2012 Chancellor’s Awards for the Alabama Community College System and has also received the NAACP Community Service Award, Alabama Southern’s 2012 Impact Award, and the 2014 Monroe County Civic Club’s Spark Award.
Before working at Alabama Southern, Kay was employed as a staff attorney at Legal Services Corporation of Alabama and was featured in an issue of The Alabama Lawyer. She has served on the Monroe County Juvenile Justice Coordinating Committee and is currently active in several professional and community organizations. She serves as Director-at-Large of the Alabama Association for Public Continuing and Adult Education and is also president-elect of the Alabama Adult Education Directors’ Association. Kay is on the Board of Directors for Monroeville Main Street and is a board member for Southwest Alabama Behavioral Health Care Systems and a member of the Quality Assurance Committee for the Monroe County Department of Human Resources.
Kay is the mother of one son, Evan Dean, who is a senior at Auburn University.
